What? An Instant Pot? Do I really need another appliance?

I never knew how much I would like one of these Instant Pots until Someone bought it for me two years ago for Christmas. I have gotten rid of not only my rice cooker but also my slow cooker and now I only have one appliance on the counter! This is such a great investment for anyone who is not just a busy mom but could be a single person living on their own. I loved mine so much that I bought my 21-year-old son an Instant Pot and he cooks in it all the time. He loves making Indian food in it. When we get together we exchange recipes. I literally use mine every day!

What is an Instant Pot?

If you have never heard of an Instant Pot, I can tell you a little bit about it. It is an electric appliance and it is a pressure cooker that has all sorts of settings on it to cook different kinds of food

Depending on the model that you decide on there are many buttons on this counter appliance:

  • Meat/stew: Cook meat from frozen if you like and make your favourite stew or one of my favourite easy-to-make recipes is shredded beef for some amazing beef burritos.
  • Soup/Broth: ever buy a chicken from the grocery store and have the leftover carcass? Put the carcass straight into the instant pot then add some cold water and spices within you have chicken broth for your favourite soup! strain the bones and start adding veg and continue cooking for a delicious homemade soup
  • Bean/Chili: what an awesome function to have! Not only is it great for preparing beans quickly with no soaking but also making Chili. I love making Chili in the winter and this option is so quick and easy to use
  • Poultry: If you doing shredded chicken or a whole chicken this is a great option I love making steamed chicken in my instant pot it falls right off of the bone.
  • Rice: So you need a quick side, Try this option for making your rice you can add beans to this or cumin however you like it always turns out to be perfectly cooked rice.
  • Multigrain: If you would like to cook a heartier grain like wild rice, brown rice, and similar tough grains this is the best function for that. You can also use it for beans.
  • Porridge: The porridge button sets an initial cooking time and you can adjust as needed. By default, the button cooks at high pressure for different times of cooking. By default, the normal setting is for white rice, porridge/congee. The more setting is 30 minutes by default and again is used for rice porridge/ congee and with a mix of beans or various grains. The less setting is 5 minutes by default and is for cooking steel-cut or rolled oats. You have to make sure that you adjust the time as needed for your recipe and use a natural release on these types of foods because they expand.
  • Steam: Yes this setting is for cooking vegetables, fish, and seafood as well as tofu. This setting uses Low pressure, which helps avoid any overcooking the food and also means that the Instant Pot will come to pressure quicker.
  • SlowCooker: Simply amazing! The instant pot is even a slow cooker so if you like to put dinner on in the morning before you head off to work and come home to a homemade supper. The Instant Pot has this function as well.
  • Sauté: You can brown your meat on the saute mode before you slow or pressurize it or caramelize your onions or anything else you wish you can also continue to deglaze your pot after cooking or make a gravy the options are endless!
  • Yogurt: The Instant Pot acts as an incubator for the yogurt, keeping the temperature at about 110 F for several hours, this cannot be done on the stovetop pressure cooker. I also like to use this setting to proof dough one of my favourite recipes for this is this Rosemary Rustic Bread.
  • Pressure Cook: The default Instant Pot meat setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at High Pressure for 35 minutes, which is suitable for dishes like beef stew or pulled pork. If you press the Meat/Stew button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More (this simply changes the cooking time). This is the setting I use for my Instant Pot Ribs as well as my Shredded Beef Recipe:

How do you cook rice in an Instant Pot?

So easy, Depending on how you like your rice more sticky or more fluffy of course determines how much water you add to your rice for traditional rice I always use the rule of thumb 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cup water but because we are using the instant pot I will use less water because the steam is not escaping as the instant pot is sealed there is less evaporation of water during the cooking process. So I use about 1 1/4 cup of water to 1 cup rice but you can defiantly play around with this to your desired taste Just don’t do less than a 1 on 1 ratio.

Steps in making :

  • Rinse your rice underwater. I do this until the water runs clear and sometimes you can have bad pieces of rice that you can see and discard at this time. The water should run clear from your wet rice.

  • Add rinsed rice and your water or you can substitute a broth for your water if you would like more flavour.
  • This next step is totally optional. I sometimes like to add beans to my rice. so I will rinse a can of black beans and then add them to the rice at this time I also add cumin sometimes. Totally depends on what cuisine you are making but you can defiantly fancy your rice up even if it’s brown rice!
  • Put Instant Pot, pot, inside your countertop appliance and secure with your lid. To make your perfectly cooked rice
  • Make sure your steam release handle is pointing sealing.
